The first in a planned annual anthology series, The Spectral Book Of Horror Stories is a stone cold classic. Published by Spectral Press and edited by Mark Morris – whose introduction sets the scene well – this is a beautiful looking book containing 19 marvelously well-written short stories.
The collection starts with Ramsey Campbell‘s cruel and funny On The Tour and ends with Stephen Volk‘s frightening and moving Newspaper Heart, both corkers. Other favourites were The Dog’s Home by Alison Littlewood, Eastmouth by Alison Moore, Cures For A Sickened World by Brian Hodge, Outside Heavenly by Rio Youers, The October Widow by Angela Slatter and John Llewellyn Probert’ The Life Inspector. But the whole collection is well worth reading and I’d really recommend grabbing the spiffy paperback too.
