A crazy ride into NYC’s crime underworld for an unlucky veteran whose forced to be an Assassin. When his girlfriend is kidnapped he vows revenge.

PDB: Which music, books, films or television shows have floated your boat recently?

I’ve had a love affair with Irish crime fiction for the last few years. Writers like Ken Bruen, Adrian McKinty and Stuart Neville have blown me away. I aspire to walk in their shadows. There’s also been some absolutely awesome writing on cable with shows like Breaking Bad, True Detectives and Vikings.

PDB: Is it possible for a writer to be an objective reader?

Not for me. I have very strong feelings, about subject matter, plots that make sense and writing styles.

PDB: Do you have any interest in writing for films, theatre or television?

If there were an opportunity I would grab it in a second. I’ve found myself analysing, movies and TV to no end.

PDB: How much research goes into each book?

Research is critical to help to reader visualize the world I create. I’ve found that writing what you know supported with solid research is key.

garrardPDB: How useful or important are social media for you as a writer?

I’ve been trying to build a social platform since launching Bourbon & Blood in July 2013. I’m totally convinced that social media can work if you find the right audience. The trick is helping them find you and it takes a lot of work.

PDB: What’s on the cards for 2014?

I’m very excited to launch the sequel to Bourbon & Blood this summer and give Bill Conlin another opportunity to continue his career as a badass anti-hero.
