I’m writing stories based on art by Darwin’s Mishap for Sunburry Press. Genres ranging from horror, mystery to SF and Fantasy. His surreal art will be featured prominently, about 14 or 15 paintings.
PDB: What music, books, films or television shows have floated your boat recently?
Ah! I love British TV. Recently got into Psychoville…..strange show. Never would make it on TV in America…that’s why I like it. IT Crowd is great. Mighty Boosh is genius.
PDB: Is it possible for a writer to be an objective reader?
Yeah they can be. Since that’s what they are to begin with before they started writing. If someone else s work isn’t your cup of tea, then that’s where it should be left at. Just move on to another book you like.
PDB: Do you have any interest in writing for films, theatre or television?
I’d definitely like to write plays or even radio scripts because that seems to be a lost art. I’d like to learn the craft of those. I’d like to write for an ongoing comic book series.
PDB: How much research goes into each book?
Depends on the story. It might just go as far watching a movie about that time period or going to the library and getting a ton of books on the subject.
Its a double-edged sword I’m finding out. It’s great to make contacts, friends from different countries, different worlds. Its also a worrying factor when a group can band together against one person and make their life hell. For the most part its been great connecting with people. I think the problem, especially using social media for promotion, is a writer ends up selling the book to other writers who are just as poor. So if anyone can find find a happy medium, that would be the ticket.
PDB: What’s on the cards for 2014?
I’m going to have two books come out. One for Death Throes publishing, the art book/story compilation for Sunbury Press. Keeping Nightmare Illustrated horror magazine with Horrified Press rolling, and I’m hoping to finish the punk rock crime story with L.A. Sykes.
Bio: MARK SLADE lives in Williamsburg,VA, U.S. With his Wife and Daughter and a Pomeranian who uses mind control on humans. In Sept. 2013 Horrified press released his first book, a horror-fantasy-western, A SIX GUN AND THE QUEEN OF LIGHT. He is co editor with Nathan Rowark of the horror magazine Nightmare illustrated, which is in the spirit of EC Comics.
